Detroit Balsa Bug contests at Muncie 2023

From: SkyKing aka Greg Simon

Roger,
Hi, I have attached the results of the three Balsa Bug America Cup contests flown this summer at Muncie.
Please Post on SEN..  I also provided a summary of each.  Thank you again for all the work you do managing the SEN!

1. Intercity Meet June 3rd & 4th:
Weather was very nice with light winds until about 2 pm, high 85 F. There were a few tricky rounds and Charlie Jones and Paul Crowley  managed to stay clean in F1B, settled in a fly-off at the Nats and Charlie getting the nod by about 20sec’s.  Bob Sifleet and David Sechrist  battled hard in F1Q and Bob managed to stay clean for the win.  Sunday was pretty much a blow out, but David Sechrist came to play andonly dropped a few seconds on one flight, hats off to David for flying in the tough conditions that mother nature provided!

2. 1st Hoosier Daddy Wild Bill Shailor Memorial Cup:
Some how we were able to get the OK from Yolanda and resurect the Hoosier Daddy Cup the Sunday before the Nats.
The response was very positive and we had a nice turn out along with five 3 min rounds before the wind came up. This is very fortunate at Muncie to run 3’s for five rounds with no danger of leaving the field.  We could have finished with 2 min max’s, but the flyers were content and were saving energy for the Nats.  Brian VanNest managed to stay clean in F1A for the win and the two Texas boys were hot on his reel.( Jim and Steve).  FiB was a 4 way max out, Charlie, Aram, Evan and myself.  With all the Nats agenda all week, we never had a chance to complete the fly-off, so we all receive 4th place pts.  F1Q battle between David & Bob again, Bob finding the bubble in the fly-off.
F1P battle between Hanford and Fedor, Bobby getting the win.  Similar battle in F1J with John L. getting the edge on Mike McK. F1G went to Chuck Markos and F1S to Jack murphy. Nothing in F1H. The Shailor family was present and handed out the awards with myself, I am sure Bill was looking down.  I would like to thank all the flyers for coming a day early and supporting us. Fun contest!

3. Brodersen FAI Challenge:
Another great day for weather, 3-5mph, 80-85 F and some overcast until afternoon. Four rds of 3min with an east wind was fantastic. Rounds 5 & 6 were 2 min to keep from pushing the envelope if you had a long DT descent. (typically 1 min to come down after DT)
F1A had no flyers. Four flyers in F1B and all would have been clean, except Paul Crowley had a DT malfunction and GPS interference was suspected. Charle, Evan & Greg opted for the 2 min DT fly-off in the evening with 3-5 mph with fast drift.  All three of us were within 3 sec’s of each other and Greg getting the squeaker win. Charlie and Evan not giving up the ship easily.  F1Q David and Bob show again with Bob being able to stay out of some tricky drop conditions. F1G Geralyn Jones put the pedal down and Greg was left in the dust, nice win Geralyn!
F1S David and John were juicing it up and David leaned on the Voltage to shock John into second place. Good competition there.
No entries in F1P/F1C and F1H.  Wishing everyone a nice Autumn season and thank you again for supporting our contests this year!  Greg Simon

Fly Off procedures

From: Stepan Stefan

I want to talk about this issue, so maybe it will change. Preparation for fly-off.

This sports season is coming to an end. We had many competitions with a large number of participants.

Good weather and many participants in the final. And so I want to discuss one more issue. This especially applies to participants with F1B models. Unfortunately, the organizers announce the starting position for participants 10-15 (and sometimes 5 ) minutes before the start of the fly Off. And this is a big problem! We have to prepare for the flight: set up a stand for winding the rubber, fix the models, move things closer to the start. We have a finale duration of 7 minutes. Two minutes to wind up and sometimes a minute or more to run to the start and 3 minutes to choose the weather.

My proposal is to require the organizers to announce the number of the starting position one hour before the start of the final. The finalists are known immediately after the end of the rounds. So what is the problem to do it? I don’t care what position number I will have: 1, 2 or 30… But I want to know it in advance!

Limiting Thermal Detection

From: Bob Mattes

If thermal detection were made a bit more difficult would it not make getting a max more difficult and possibly reduce the quantity of fliers in the fly offs.  To that end why not eliminate all electronic thermal detection allowing only the use of streamers and other physical air current direction detection such as bubbles and fluffies. An additional advantage is this further encourages having the best overall performing aircraft and does not obsolete existing equipment.

Bob a former FAI Power flier.
