The F1B Book by Masaru Koike

 From: Chris Stoddard
Hi Roger,
Here is a short review of the F1B book by Masaru Koike

After seeing the notice in SEN 3179 I contacted Masaru Koike by email and arranged to purchase a copy of The F1B Book (Free Flight F1B – Technology and Science for Extending Duration). I paid by PayPal and promptly received a pdf format file of the text translated to the English language without the illustrations. About 2 weeks later I received the printed copy in Japanese language. It is rare to have the opportunity to read a detailed discussion by a high level competitor of the broad range of topics in a particular competitive event, this book does just that for the F1B class. I found it straightforward to read the English language text which contains the captions for the illustrations and then examine the Japanese language book to view the illustrations. Using a camera based translation app on my iPhone facilitated further understanding of details within the illustrations.
I’ve started reading portions of the book and had the feeling that Masaru Koike was seated beside me as an instructor. He competed in F1B at the 2023 FAI World Championship at Moncontour France, dropping a max in the final round of competition thus missing participating in the fly-off.

best wishes,
Chris

In working on the Fab Feb events there are a number of complications. Firstly because the Kiwi and North American events from New Zealand and Canada respectively they need approval from firstly the AMA because it’s flown in the USA and then the NAC from New Zealand and Canada. Each year the FAI process for this seems to be a little different sometimes with a twist on how the FAI sanction fee is paid.  And of course there is an AMA sanction plus doing the AMA associate membership for international visitors to the USA.   Then if the visiting sportsman comes from certain countries that need a visa to visit the USA and “official invitation” is needed from the AMA with the “official” stamp on it.  So the people who make this all go smoothly start with Colleen Pierce from AMA’s Competition Dept, in Canada  it is  Alyson at the Aeroclub of Canada and Liz King is the FAI person at Flying New Zealand that makes it all happen.  Our last resort to iron out FAI kinks is Ian Kaynes.  So for the 110 people from 20 countries so far headed to Lost Hills in about 3 weeks for the 3 contests that make up Fab Feb these 4 people plus your own NAC are an important part of those who make international World Cup events happen, so thanks we appreciate what you do for us.
