about time

Dear Roger,
According to the current FAI code, a competitor may use an altimeter during a flyoff, but is in no way obligated to present the result obtained with it. This means that the result registered through an altimeter is used only to challenge the result recorded by the timekeeper and only for the benefit of the competitor. Cases where a competitor presents the altimeter result to reduce the result recorded by the by the timer are rare.
This is an anomaly that must be addressed by a code change that will oblige a competitor who wishes to enjoy the result of an altimeter in a flyoff to present it in any case so that the result of the altimeter shall prevail. Those who registered an altimeter but do not present the result reading, for any reason whatsoever, a zero result will be recorded for that flight.
A competitor cannot only enjoy the upside of using an altimeter but not the downside that comes with is.
One might say that there could be a malfunction in the altimeter and why should the competitor be harmed by this. This is a futile argument as the sole responsibility falls on the competitor to purchase reliable equipment and to know how to operate it well. The same goes for any other equipment on board a model and why should an altimeter be different.
It seems to me that the time has come (About Time) to make the aforementioned code adjustment after few years’ experiences has been gained in using altimeters in flyoffs. This will promote the reliability of the results in our sport, be fair to all the other competitors in the competition and shall avoid any doubts about its results.
Best Regards,
Gil Hagay

I completely agree with you. I noticed at the recent Euro Champs I noticed that only contestant registered his Mini-Neuron flight at the Neuron sponsored About Time web site.  Because after all why tell the world what your real time was when the blind time keeper said you won !

After all the snarky comments about the local telco I initially thought that there was no internet. But there was because of all the FB postings.
