The 45th Annual MMM 14-Round Contest
Denver, July 13-14, 2024
By Pete McQuade and John McGrath, CDs
It was a hot but dry weekend. On Saturday, the first two rounds had lighter winds than predicted and lift was very good. The wind picked up in Round 3, so we delayed the start of Round 4 until later in the day. We were finally able to hold that round before cancelling Rounds 5-7 for high winds. Thus ended the FAI Centennial Cup contest. The day’s flying was only marred by an unfortunate retrieval accident that put Frank Menanno in the hospital. But a different misfortune was averted with Tiffaney O’Dell’s very long flight in F1G that carried the model well past County Line Road. Fortunately, Blake Jensen eventually brought back the wayward model.
Day 2, Columbine Cup Sunday, was one of those “cream puff” days you dream about: light winds, booming thermals, and 100-degree temperatures that don’t feel at all oppressive—especially under the new permanent shelter that club members had built the previous weekend!
After Round 6, the FAI fliers agreed to call it quits. A short while later, we held a brief awards ceremony, including the awarding of perpetual trophies for the FAI events. We also gave out awards for the AMA, NFFS, and SAM events.
Many thanks to Bernie Olson who bought all the food and fixings for the on-the-field barbecue. There were incredible burgers, brats, Italian sausages, and chicken patties. Thanks also to Jeff Pakiz and Darold Jones, who helped with the cooking.
Before the contest, Chuck Etherington had lent his riding mower to Pete McQuade so he could clear out a large area for the F1A fliers to tow in. The resulting, “Rocky Mountain Towline Glider Park” makes towing so much nicer!
Winners of the two-day-contest perpetual cups and trophies were:
F1A Pete McQuade
F1B Bernard Guest
F1Q Jack Murphy
F1G Tiffaney O’Dell
F1J Frank Menanno
F1S Jack Murphy
