Lost Hills Field Conditions

From: Mike McKeever

I spent a few days at Lost Hills at the USFFC and have a couple of observations for those attending the Kotuku and Sierra Cups as well as the US Team Selection Finals:

Gators are necessary unless you have an unlimited supply of sox and sneakers…boots have a chance to survive the fox tails that have taken over Lost Hills.

There is no area beyond the area used for the USFFC that is cleared of the fox tails so while I may use this cleared area for one of the three lines I want to set up, there will be two lines set up where fox tails rule the day…very important for F1A flyers and less important for F1B, C and Q participants.

The area where the USFFC took place is an area used before when we had rain and is somewhat rutted so careful motorcycle riding is required.

Hollaway cleared the chase road for the F1E “on the hill” crowd but the slope is very much heavier brush.  While Hollaway offered to clear that brush, my thought was that would make the potential for dust too great and opted for chase road clearance only.  Thanks to Hollaway for their work on the chase road.

Finally the dry grass, as opposed to the bare ground, led to some interesting thermal conditions that made it tough for the B crowd to max out with only two of the nine F1B flyers maxing out.  Congratulations to Daryl Perking on the win and Matt Kruse on a nice second place.   There were no fly offs in F1A, F1C and F1Q.

So with the Finals approaching, be advised as to the field conditions.  I’m looking for timers, especially when F1A times on Thursday 10/17…Javier Abad from Spain just volunteered and I’m looking for about five more to help us out.

That’s the latest from Lost Hills.  Please let me know if you are available to time, it’s a great way to see the state of the art for FAI free flight up close!
