World Cup Calendar
From Jeremy Fitch
Looking at the 2025 World Cup calendar just out in Free Flight News.
The practice of grouping WC contests in twos and threes continues. I count 17 “two-fers”, 5 three-fers, and only 10 singletons. Having multiple contests on a weekend at the same venue seems like a good and obvious way of encouraging participation, by offering 2 or 3 times the return on the expense of long-distance travel.
The USA has a 3-fer and a 2-fer, but the concept could be more fully exploited by doing a few things:
* Finding a second contest to pair with the Nats using a borrowed allocation
* Conferring World Cup status on the two Oregon contests, which are already paired but in need of a borrowed world cup allocation from another country (China or Japan maybe?)
* Moving the December Arizona contest (maybe just the FAI component) to pair up with the January one, and do another allocation-borrowing (Mexico or Argentina?) to make them World Cup contests.
US flyers would then be in a better position for WC competition, which is currently dominated by the cluster of contests in eastern Europe. We also might attract more overseas participation this way.
Editor’s Comment
The World Cup applications have to be in by mid November for the CIAM Meeting and approvals.

Quick Analysis of 2024 FAI F1B World Cup Results
There is a believing that the current performance of F1B models are very high, most of the competitors getting full results, in flyoff, scores are very high, so the proposed solution is to reduce the rubber weight to 25 grams. I selected eighteen F1B contests from 2024 World Cup where I believe the organization was good and time keeping was correct, then I have made a simple analysis:
Number of total competitors in 18 contests: 400
Number of competitors with full scores: 157
Average of total maximum time of standard rounds: 1172 seconds
Percentage of competitors with full results: 39%
16 competitions finished after first fly-off flight
For only 2 competitions, second flyoff flight was needed (Note: Second flyoff was flown in Nikolay Y. Nikolov Cup for second and third positions)
Distribution of first flyoff scores of top 3 winners where competitions finished in first flyoff:
Between 400 seconds and 455 seconds: 17 flights
Between 300 seconds and 398 seconds: 16 flights
Between 200 and 297 seconds: 9 flights
Between 100 and 194 seconds: 3 flights
Distribution of second flyoff scores of top 3 winners where competitions finished in second flyoff:
Between 400 seconds and 446 seconds: 1 flight
Between 300 seconds and 387 seconds: 2 flights
Between 200 and 286 seconds: 3 flights
My conclusion: Flyoff is the most beautiful part of the competitions, watching the flying models in flyoff or participating in flyoff round is the most exciting part. If the organization is good, competitors are more involved in time keeping, if the binoculars to watch the models are good enough, time keepers are serious and careful, if the competition is opened as early as possible, if the organizer waits for flyoff until the thermals are getting weaker, then there is not any problem with the current F1B flying times. I know in some competitions there are organizational problems but this should not be the reason to deteriorate the beauty of flying of F1B models. Following is the table of the results (top three of each contests) included in my simple analysis.
